Green lipped mussels are one of New Zealand’s unique underwater treasures. We Kiwis love them, not only because they’re delicious, but because of their many health benefits: mussels were touted as New Zealand’s first superfood.
But first, why are mussels such a health hit?
Three cheers for Omega-3
Mussels are bursting at the shells with Omega-3 fatty acids, which are proven to alleviate inflammatory conditions like joint pains, heart disease, and diabetes.
We know every parent of a fur baby thinks theirs is the cutest in the world. Well, here’s more good news for you: omega-3 is also known to help improve skin condition and keep coats shiny.
A joint effort
Mussels pack in lots of glucosamine and chondroitin (what we like to call the GCs), which keep dogs’ joints in tip-top condition. The GCs are naturally present in cartilage and ligaments, but they begin to break down with age, causing arthritis and limiting mobility. Suddenly ‘walkies’ might not seem quite so exciting!
Feeding green mussels to arthritic dogs significantly improved their joint pain and swelling.
Great for fur babies of all ages and a great little dehydrated treat.
